Leyh has been actively involved in PROMO, and her focus since beginning at the Brown School has been social justice and human diversity work. She has primarily assisted in lobbying efforts for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to achieve protection for the LGBT community against discriminatory hiring practices and firing in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Leyh is also involved in OUTLook, the Brown Schools LGBT group, and is a co-president for the Branch Out for Olin. Leyh met Pierce in a class in the Brown School and the classs professor, Anna Shabsin, also a board member for Promo, performed their marriage ceremony. Leyh said she can only speak highly of the Brown School as an incredibly supportive and inclusive community. Eckstrand, an M.D./Ph.D. candidate, has been involved in LGBT initiatives on both the national and local levels. At Vanderbilt she is the founder and co-director of the Vanderbilt program for LGBTI Health, an innovative effort to improve the care of LGBTI patients. Eckstrand said diversity in medical education has evolved since she first arrived at Vanderbilt in 2008. Basically, medical education has paralleled the national stage on LGBT issues, Eckstrand said. We are not comparing an apple with an apple, unfortunately, when we compare the scores from one year to the next because their scoring system changes, he said. It is still a compelling tool, but the problem is when you stick a score out there, the general public just looks at a score and compares it to the last score. They dont do all the homework. In addition, Angie Rush, human relations administrator with the city, said the scoring criteria do not seem consistent from city to city. For example, Fort Worth received full points in 2013 for the Fort Worth school districts anti-bullying policy that specifically includes protection for gender identity. In 2014, however, the city got no points in that category because not all the school districts within the city limits have the same enumerated policy, and in changing criteria this year, the Human Rights Campaign said all school districts in the city must have such policies for the city to receive credit. But Dallas, where not all school districts in the city have such anti-bullying policies, received full credit in that category. They gave those same points to Dallas who has the same issue that we would, so I dont know that there are errors, but I think it was applied differently, said Rush.

Other oil and gas companies that made strides this year are Marathon Oil Corp. of Houston, which improved its score to 75 from 15 last year; and ConocoPhillips of Houston, which increased its score to 75 from 55 the previous year. Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. were also among the sectors top performers. According to the HRC, there were no new survey participants this year from the oil and gas sector, which has the second-worst response rate out of the 40 industries that the organization researches and includes in its annual index. Despite repeated invitations and encouragement to participate, only eight oil and gas companies return their surveys and receive an official CEI rating, said Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundations Workplace Equality Program.
